By Bridge: The cost of monitoring steel

Re "Doubts persist on Bay Bridge job" (Page A1, June 8): What caught my attention was the cost to monitor all the steel coming from China. It's disturbing when you consider the number of jobs that could have been created by requiring all products and manufactured parts come from companies who manufacture in the United States.

Why not require that all bidders respond to the bid notices by using U.S. based goods and products in their bids. This will cost more but I think most people would support this idea. Eventually this would bring more jobs and restore our countries pride in things built and manufactured in the U.S.

It is time for the California Legislature to bring some common sense to this issue by passing legislation to address this situation.
