Re "Right call to put off "leisure tax" (Editorial, June 10): My thanks to the Editorial Board for supporting a tax for civic amenities including the Sacramento Zoo.
The nonprofit Board of Trustees has been responsible for the fiscal stability of the Zoo since taking over the management from the city in 1997. Since that time, the Zoo has managed to make many improvements all while paying the ever increasing costs of caring for the animals and staff. We enjoy over one-half million visitors and over 70,000 students each year. This is done with only a small stipend from the city. The Zoo needs a sustainable source of revenue to continue to make improvements.
Later this year, the Zoo will be rolling out exciting plans for a transformation within our 14 acres that will add new animal habitats and create a unique experience for our visitors. This won't be possible without a reliable source of funding.
