Vergara: Hostile to educators

Re Tom Meyer Cartoon (Viewpoints, June 18): The Sacramento Bee's hostility to educators is evident since the Vergara decision, which removes teachers' employment protections. A reader would hardly know from The Bee that many experts believe the decision was bad law and policy. The New York Times did better. On June 17, the Bee implicitly endorsed on-line colleges when it praised Starbucks for paying employees' tuition. The online college craze, a scheme to avoid paying educators, collapsed last year when it turned out that good online courses are more expensive than standard ones. On the next page, a column praised New Orleans' charter schools, notorious now for importing Filipino teachers to work almost as slaves. On June 18, a political cartoon portrayed a teacher as a raving fanatic. When you are hostile to dedicated educators, who work hard, often on bad terms, doing the most important work, your politics have gotten ugly. -- John S. Rundin, Davis
