Re "CalPERS should pull money from fossil fuels industry" (Viewpoints, July 10): Mayors Jean Quan, Gayle McLaughlin and Tom Bates are right. CalPERS, your divestment of fossil fuel holdings will be a powerful weapon against climate change.

Divestment worked to bring down apartheid in South Africa and to protect millions of Americans from the devastating effects of cigarette smoking. Inspired by the power of divestment, even individual investors are joining the movement, as well as cities, universities, churches and other pension funds. We must stop supporting oil, coal and natural gas companies which create the pollution contributing to deadly respiratory diseases like asthma and bronchitis and trapping the solar energy in the atmosphere that fuels catastrophic storms like Hurricanes Sandy and Haiyan.
