Re "Student exchange programs broaden horizons and can change lives" (Viewpoints, July 8): As a former participant, as well as a two-time host mother, I can attest to the power of foreign exchange to change lives. I spent my junior year of high school in Venezuela, and the benefits of that exchange continue to have an impact on my life today.

My husband and I decided to host an AFS student from Germany two years ago. She was an intelligent, kind-hearted, outgoing young woman that enriched our lives in so many ways. It was such a rewarding experience, that we decided to host two students this past year, from Italy and Brazil. Again, we were blessed with two amazing daughters who fit so well with us, it was like we were always meant to be family.

We highly recommend AFS. They do a wonderful job of pairing students with families and supporting everyone throughout the year.
