Re "Families must step up and care for mentally ill" (Viewpoints, July 15): Really? Do you have any idea what families go through before their family member becomes homeless, psychotic and walking the freeways? Apparently not, or you wouldn't be saying that if the family can't deal with it alone, they should find someone who can.
HR 3717 needs to pass so families can find someone to help. The seriously mentally ill do not realize they are ill most of the time and refuse help. Families are stressed and feel helpless and hopeless and when they try to get help, they find no services or road blocks.
The headline "How can we help families care for the mentally ill?" might be more accurate.
