Re "Criminal defense lawyers deserve some respect for their role in justice" (Viewpoints, July 17): Jeff Adachi makes a compelling case for the role of criminal defense lawyers and their role in our judicial system and wonders why they are so often vilified.
Rational people will not argue with his premise. The problem arises because somehow, defense lawyers have determined that it is their duty to do everything they can to get their client off, no matter what. I am not a lawyer, but I don't know of any constitutional provision or other legal code that requires defense attorneys to use every trick in the book to get their client to walk free.
It is this overreaching that causes bitterness among people truly seeking justice. Then again, I've heard many times from lawyers that the process is not about justice.
