Re "Pro-Russia rebels downed Malaysian plane" (SacBee.com, July 17): During a presidential debate between President Barack Obama and candidate Mitt Romney in 2012, Romney stated that Russia was America's greatest geopolitical foe. President Obama replied by mocking Romney, saying the Cold War was over.

After the downing of Malaysia Flight 17 over Ukraine on Thursday, apparently by pro-Russian separatists, President Obama cannot now claim he learned about the threat level of Russia in the media as he has of many other events during his presidency. In this case, President Obama was warned in front of a national audience of the potential threat Russia may pose regionally and globally. This was demonstrated earlier this year by Russia rewriting Ukraine's borders and now in the downing of Malaysia Flight 17 by suspected Vladimir Putin backed pro-Russian separatists.

Mitt Romney now appears to have been correct.
