Real costs of BOE building repairs

Re "Move workers out of Board of Equalization building before someone gets hurt" (Viewpoints, July 11): An op-ed piece written by George Runner, an elected member of the State Board of Equalization, was printed in The Sacramento Bee nearly two weeks ago, chronicling the history of the Board headquarters building at 450 N St. the continuing deficiencies and hazards that plague the structure.

The Sunday Bee carried a far longer story of the problems that have beset the structure since employees first moved in. Both stories made reference to the costs that have been incurred by the state to remediate health and safety issues to make the structure safe.

Neither story, however, stated the exact amount of the settlement that was paid by the contractor and architect. To clear the record, it was $3 million. Neither story identified the officials who signed off on that amount. A Freedom of Information request might clear the air here.
