Re "A grizzly bear homecoming? A reality that bites" (Forum, July 20): As your thoughtful editorial points out, the return of grizzly bears to California in 2014 makes no sense. California has a rich history in the last 100 years of preservation and conservation of our wild areas, as evidenced by three Sierra Nevada national parks and vast areas of wilderness in the Southern Sierra Nevada.
The decimation of the California grizzly from its historic range (which was all of California except the desert) is a pointed lesson in the darker side of unbridled Manifest Destiny brought about by the Gold Rush. We can certainly learn from the practices that led to the extinction of ursus arctos californicus, but in 2014, the best place for grizzly bears in California is on the state flag.
