Israel tries to defend itself

Re "Israelis in front row for Gaza bombing" (Page A1, July 23): Golda Meir, Israeli prime minister in 1969, said "We will have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us." It is true that if Hamas laid down their weapons, there would be no more war. If Israel laid down its weapons, there would be no more Israel.

I read with bewilderment the condemnations of Israel and the comparison between Palestinian and Israeli deaths. When thousands of Palestinian missiles strike Israel, Israelis retreat to bomb shelters. Should we condemn Israel for building bomb shelters while Hamas built tunnels for attacking Israel? Those tunnels are massive structures with electricity, an amenity in short supply for the Palestinian people.

What should Israel do? How can it survive the unending attacks? As Golda Meir also said: "We Jews have a secret weapon in our struggle with the Arabs. We have no place to go."
