Re "Obama's cool detachment is calculated - and very dangerous" (Viewpoints, July 25): As if the entire world's problems fall on the United States to solve, Charles Krauthammer says a real U.S. president would give arms to Russian opposition in the Ukraine, and then give a Reaganesque speech explaining why.
I'm assuming the Reaganesque speech Krauthammer refers to is the one Ronald Reagan gave after reluctantly leaving his Santa Barbara vacation on Sept. 5, 1983, four days after a South Korean passenger airliner carrying 269 people, 60 of which were American, was shot down by the Russians. Aside from its tardiness, the speech was unremarkable.
As for arming Russian opposition, Reagan did just that in Afghanistan, making it possible for Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda to flourish
