Plagiarism or flattery

Re "Our selfie culture often lacks decorum" (Jack Ohman, July 27): I felt a sense of deja vu after reading Jack Ohman's piece about the Alabama teen taking a selfie at Auschwitz. I then recalled reading virtually the same piece, including examples, from syndicated columnist Leonard Pitts Jr.'s opinion piece on the topic.
Didn't the Sacramento Bee editorial department vet Ohman's piece before it went to print? Is this merely a case of imitation being the highest form of flattery or just plain ol' plagiarism?
