Re "Drought taking a bite out of food budgets" (Forum. Aug. 3): I have always been very frugal with my food budget, and it scares me to see the fast rising prices at the grocery stores and farmers' markets.
I keep a monthly journal to track my groceries and purchasing habits. I buy and cook in quantities, and I freeze for future use when items are not in season. I love my vacuum food sealer. I'm known as the Soup Lady in our neighborhood, as I make huge pots of soup to freeze to share with our neighbors when they are ill or having surgeries and then they don't have to worry about at least one meal.
Not much goes to waste in our home. Even when we eat out, we share a meal and add a salad as the portions are so large. We don't want to be wasteful, but we do eat very well.
