Re "Broken system leaves victims helpless" (Another View, Aug. 10): Heart speaks to heart. I am so grateful for the article by Candy and Hans DeWitt that explains the importance of assisted outpatient treatment for those in our community suffering from severe mental illness.
Their words helped to alleviate some of the shame and guilt some of us parents feel. I too have an adult child with a serious mental illness. It is heartbreaking for a parent to witness a child who has no insight into their own illness and ends up doing something harmful to themselves or others during a psychotic state.
Laura's Law can be used in a compassionate and prudent manner so that people who lack self-awareness with their mental illness will not be denied the treatment they need and deserve, and families will be empowered to help their loved ones who are ill.
