Re "Williams' friends saw signs of fall into depression" (Aug. 13): As a former resident of Tiburon, many of us felt like we knew Robin Williams as a friend.

I belonged to the Belvedere Tennis Club. His mother played doubles next to my singles games, and we always kidded back and forth. One of his favorite sayings was,"I can walk down the streets of San Francisco and feel very normal."

Jane and I saw him several years ago at a fundraising event. I walked up to him and asked, "May I tell you a joke?"

"Of course," he replied.

"A Buddhist monk walked up to a hot dog vendor in New York City, ordering a hot dog. He gave the vendor a $100 bill. The vendor gave him his hot dog with no money back. 'Where is my change,' asked the Buddhist."

Robin than said, "Your change comes from within."

The genius has done it again.
