Re "Davis acquires mine-resistant war vehicle while some complain of militarization of police" (SacBee.com, Aug. 20): Davis Mayor Dan Wolk had an opportunity to demonstrate real leadership by rejecting the Davis Police Department's acquisition of an armored military vehicle. Instead, we see a bit of lip service to please critics of militarization without actually taking any action: "I hope it stays in the garage."
Sounds like Wolk is sticking to the government-knows-best party line and would prefer to keep the vehicle, which I can only assume will be used to ensure that students refrain from jaywalking on the way to class.
Davis residents deserve accountability from their city government and should demand that Wolk and the city council return the vehicle, which has no place in a peaceful college town. Sure, Picnic Day may get a little rowdy now and then, but Fallujah it ain't.
