Re "Obama should've fixed economy" (Letters, Aug. 21): Letter writer Steve Sherman wants to blame President Obama for unrest in Ferguson because "this so-called improving economy" is not improving fast enough.
But let's get real. St. Louis and Ferguson police have a documented history of discriminatory enforcement policies. Lt. Patrick Hayes was fired in 2013 after years of giving officers under his command orders to "have a black day" and make "jail cells more colorful." State statistics show blacks in Ferguson were more likely to be stopped, searched and arrested by police, even though they were less likely to be found with contraband.
Let me repeat that: blacks stopped by police were less likely to have illegal substances in their possession, yet were more likely to be arrested. Might these facts have more do with the distrust and dissatisfaction with police by residents in Ferguson than anything the president has or could have done?
