Re "An improved biking network is essential for Sacramento" (Editorial, Aug. 24): As an old-time traffic cop, I can not tell you how many times I had to go about picking up the pieces of bicycle/auto collision. I can tell you that it was too many.

Investigation generally showed a violation of some of the most fundamental rules of the road by both operators was the cause. Frequently while sitting on my porch or mowing the lawn, I see bicyclists violating stop signs, on the wrong side of the roadway and frequently traveling in the wrong direction in lanes of traffic with absolutely no idea of what was going on around them or seeming to care.

Traffic safety has been a concern for me since I was an orderly in the emergency room almost 50 years ago. It's hard to stop.
