Re "Sacramento Councilman Steve Hansen to lead opposition to strong-mayor plan" (City Beat, Aug. 19): Steve Hansen's opposition appears to be sour grapes after being on the losing side of an issue fully considered by the City Council and the city attorney.
Sacramento would not be a guinea pig for this type of governmental system. In fact, five of California's seven largest cities operate with a mayor/council system. The overwhelming majority of cities nationwide have dumped a city manager-run government.
At its core is a change that will allow voters to have our mayor- instead of a bureaucrat that none of us voted for- to be in charge and responsive to citizen concerns.
The power shift is a removal from an unelected official whose job depends on keeping nine different bosses happy to a mayor whose job it is to be directly accountable to voters. Jerry Brown pushed hard for this system in Oakland. This resulted in lower crime and balanced budgets.
