Remember reason for three-day weekend

The hard-working members of Ironworkers Local 118 know there is more to Labor Day than a three-day weekend.

Labor Day honors the pioneers of the union labor movement whose efforts brought about many of the workplace practices we all now take for granted: the eight-hour day and the 40-hour week, work breaks, overtime, jobsite safety standards.

Ironworkers Local 118 has been part of the community since 1908 with its members building many of the highways, skyscrapers, dams and bridges that form the backbone of Sacramento.

This country and this community are better because of the fight the unions fought to create a strong middle class. Workers of every sort have benefited from the efforts of union workers.

Have a fun and safe holiday weekend, but remember why you have the day off.
