Re "Picking fat over carbs not so bad, study says" (Page A1, Sept. 2): This study of picking fat over carbs (Atkins diet) is very confusing for people who want to stay healthy. My cholesterol was very high recently and a cardiologist recommended that I read Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's book on reversing heart disease. This is the doctor that reversed former president Bill Clinton's heart disease.

Dr. Esselstyn recommends eating a vegan diet with no fat. My cholesterol dropped from 240 to 170 within a few weeks. I am a patient of Kaiser, and they have been recommending a plant-based diet and have brought out many doctors to give workshops about this. Not only is a plant-based diet good for your health, but it is good for the environment and takes into account concern for animals and their lives too.

In my opinion, eating plants is the most healthy, caring and ethical thing to do.
