Bob Walter: Fair Oaks shopping center finally will hatch

Published: Thursday, Sep. 18, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 1F

Rooster is landing: Oh yeah, so is Safeway. Believe it or not, the Fair Oaks Promenade at Hazel and Madison will open Oct. 17. That's when Safeway, Peet's Coffee, Panda Express, Big Spoon Yogurt, a cleaners and a hair salon will open their doors.

It's also when a two-ton, 16-foot-tall rooster – fashioned from car bumpers by Colorado sculptor Sean Guerrero – will be unveiled, developer Paul Petrovich said.

The Promenade also will include the Fair Oaks Veterans Memorial. More on that in a couple of weeks.

But the most remarkable angle to this item is that a project that has been in the works since 1996 – surviving some bizarre and bitter public and private antics – actually is going to open ahead of schedule.

The latest schedule, anyway, which had Safeway opening on Halloween. Based on the first few schedules, the center will be opening nearly 10 years late. …

95 years and partying: This one is worth some advance calendar marking – the San Juan High School Alumni Association is throwing a BIG party on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Rusch Park.

It's the all-class reunion picnic to mark the 95th anniversary of the venerable Citrus Heights school. Who is invited? Everybody who attended, taught or worked at San Juan, along with their families.

Barbara Morarity-Van Dyke, editor of the association newsletter, said the festivities begin at 11 a.m. (though they are conducting tours of the evolving school on Oct. 3 at 3 p.m.; meeting in the auditorium foyer) and opening ceremonies are at noon.

The day will include a mammoth car and motorcycle show, entertainment by the San Juan spirit teams, the Citrus Heights Community Marching Band, dancing demonstrations and more.

A group picture – you should see the one from the 90th anniversary shindig – will be taken at 2 p.m., and at 3 o'clock they are holding a mega jam session for anybody with an instrument.

And it's all free. You can bring a picnic or buy lunch and treats to support the San Juan Culinary and Baking Arts program.

Cheers. …

A short break: By the time you read this, I will be on the tail end of a too-brief fishing, camping and golfing holiday on the other side of the Sierra. So no column next week.

Enjoy your break. I will be back in this space Oct. 2. Stay tuned. And cheers.
