The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department was still hunting Thursday for a brazen robber who shut down a shopping center in south Sacramento Wednesday night while eluding police for nearly nine hours.
At about 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, three men tried to shoplift merchandise from the Ross Dress for Less on Florin Road in the Southgate Plaza, investigators said. The men were detained by store security, but escaped before sheriff's deputies could arrive.
One of the men allegedly produced a gun in the escape, sheriff's officials said.
Two of the men, Jason Billy Washington, 20, of Sacramento and a 17-year-old boy from Utah, were captured almost immediately, said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran. The third, who sheriff's officials say may have escaped via the roof of the shopping complex, remains at large.
Curran did not wish to identify the third man, but Thursday night, an officer using a loudspeaker implored someone identified as "Tony Morgan" to surrender peacefully.
As of late Thursday afternoon, no weapon had been recovered, Curran said.
Anyone with information about the fugitive's identity is asked to call the Sheriff's Department at (916) 874-5115 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-4357. Callers may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
