Published: Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 7B

Malia and Sasha Obama won't be the first president's children to be school-age when their father takes office. Some of their predecessors:

Quentin and Archibald Roosevelt – Sons of President Theodore Roosevelt (served 1901-1909), Quentin attended Force Public School in Washington, D.C. Archibald attended the Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker school, also in Washington, D.C. Quentin was 4 when his father was sworn in. Archie was 6.

Charlie Taft – Son of President William Howard Taft (served 1909-1913), he attended the Taft School, a private boarding school in Western Connecticut. Charlie was 12 when his father took office.

John and Calvin Coolidge – Sons of President Calvin Coolidge (served 1923-1929), they attended Mercersburg Academy, an independent college-preparatory school in south-central Pennsylvania. John was 17 when his father took office. Calvin Jr. was 14.

John Aspinwall Roosevelt – Son of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (served 1933-1945), he attended Groton School, a private, Episcopal college preparatory for boys in Groton, Mass. John was 16 when his father was inaugurated.

Caroline Kennedy – Daughter of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (served 1961-1963), she was home-schooled in the White House with 10 of her friends. Jacqueline Kennedy did not want reporters following her first-grade daughter to school. Caroline was 3 when her father took office.

Susan Ford – Daughter of President Gerald Ford (served 1974-1977), she attended the Holton-Arms School, a private college preparatory school for girls in Bethesda, Md. She had her senior prom in the White House. Susan was 17 when her father was sworn in.

Amy Carter – Daughter of President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981), she attended District of Columbia public schools, Thaddeus Stevens Elementary and Hardy Middle. Amy was 9 when her father took office.

Kristin and Sarah Gore, Al Gore III – Children of Vice President Al Gore (served 1993-2001). His daughters attended the National Cathedral School for Girls, an Episcopal school in Washington, D.C. Brother Al attended St. Alban's, an Episcopal school for boys. Kristin was 15, Sarah 14, and Al 11 when their father took office.

Chelsea Clinton – Daughter of President Bill Clinton (served 1993-2001), she attended Sidwell Friends School. Chelsea was 12 when her father was inaugurated.

What You Should Know About Comments on Sacbee.com

Sacbee.com is happy to provide a forum for reader interaction, discussion, feedback and reaction to our stories. However, we reserve the right to delete inappropriate comments or ban users who can't play nice. (See our full terms of service here.)

Here are some rules of the road:

• Keep your comments civil. Don't insult one another or the subjects of our articles. If you think a comment violates our guidelines click the "report abuse" button to notify the moderators. Responding to the comment will only encourage bad behavior.

• Don't use profanities, vulgarities or hate speech. This is a general interest news site. Sometimes, there are children present. Don't say anything in a way you wouldn't want your own child to hear.

• Do not attack other users; focus your comments on issues, not individuals.

• Stay on topic. Only post comments relevant to the article at hand. If you want to discuss an issue with a specific user, click on his profile name and send him a direct message.

• Do not copy and paste outside material into the comment box.

• Don't repeat the same comment over and over. We heard you the first time.

• Do not use the commenting system for advertising. That's spam and it isn't allowed.

• Don't use all capital letters. That's akin to yelling and not appreciated by the audience.

You should also know that The Sacramento Bee does not screen comments before they are posted. You are more likely to see inappropriate comments before our staff does, so we ask that you click the "report abuse" button to submit those comments for moderator review. You also may notify us via email at feedback@sacbee.com. Note the headline on which the comment is made and tell us the profile name of the user who made the comment. Remember, comment moderation is subjective. You may find some material objectionable that we won't and vice versa.

If you submit a comment, the user name of your account will appear along with it. Users cannot remove their own comments once they have submitted them, but you may ask our staff to retract one of your comments by sending an email to feedback@sacbee.com. Again, make sure you note the headline on which the comment is made and tell us your profile name.
