CSU campuses to limit enrollments

The California State University system will eliminate 10,000 admission spots for the 2009-10 school year as a result of the state's worsening fiscal crisis.

Charles B. Reed, CSU chancellor, announced the reduction during a press conference this morning.

While several over-enrolled schools in the 23-campus CSU system are already affected, Reed said today's announcement will affect most campuses.

Each campus, Reed said, will be assigned an enrollment quota, which will equal student enrollment for the 2007-08 school year.

Depending on their individual enrollment demand, campuses will close applications for admissions as early as Nov. 30 or as late as March 1, 2009.

Total enrollment in the CSU system, the largest four-year university in the country is about 460,000 students. The reduction will lower that figure to about 450,000.
