For the third time in the last five years, the city of Placerville has received top honors for its National Night Out observance.
Police Chief George Nielsen said the city was notified that it placed first for 2008 among cities nationwide with populations of less than 15,000. Although crime-fighting is the focus of the event, sponsored the first Tuesday in August by the National Association of Town Watch, National Night Out has become a major social event of the summer in Placerville.
Activities are designed to fight crime and promote public safety by helping residents get acquainted with their neighbors and public services in the community.
Nielsen said approximately 4,000 people participated in neighborhood block parties and communitywide events this year.
During the last five years, Placerville has placed first three times and second twice.
