A series of free guided hikes will scan bald eagle habitat in the Cache Creek Natural Area on six successive Saturdays, Jan. 17 through Feb. 21.
The four-mile hikes, led by Bureau of Land Management staff members and docents, begin at 10 a.m. and last three to four hours. Hikes will be canceled in event of rain.
Since the first mile includes a 600-foot climb, BLM staff recommends that hikers be in good physical condition, wear sturdy hiking boots suitable for wet trails, dress for cold weather and bring a sack lunch and water.
The vistas of Cache Creek Canyon also yield sightings of tule elk, osprey, herons, red-tailed hawks, egrets and golden eagles. Binoculars are advised because most eagle sightings are from a distance, BLM Park Ranger Larry Ames said.
Hikes begin at the Redbud trail head, about 29 miles west of Williams on Highway 20, just west of the North Fork Cache Creek bridge.
