Inside City Hall: Security guard may be back soon

Published: Wednesday, Jul. 1, 2009 - 12:00 am | Page 3B

Louis the Security Guard may be back in two months

One of the interesting figures in last year's bitterly contested mayoral campaign should be back at City Hall soon.

It's not former Mayor Heather Fargo or any of the operatives who worked on the campaigns.

We're talking about Louis the Security Guard – the night guard who took Mayor Kevin Johnson on his unauthorized after-hours tour of City Hall a week before the election.

Assistant City Manager Marty Hanneman said Louis – whose full name is Louis Joya – should be back working in City Hall in two or three months. He had been reassigned after the mini controversy that followed Johnson's impromptu visit.

"There's no reason from our perspective that he can't come back," Hanneman said.

On Oct. 25, candidate Johnson and one of his staffers were escorted into City Hall by Joya, who told police he didn't recognize Johnson because he didn't "follow politics."

Johnson was caught on surveillance tape sitting in Fargo's chair at the Council Chambers dais. He later told police he had asked to sit in the mayor's chair to test its comfort.

Fargo would call Johnson's ride in her seat "bizarre" and "unsettling." After a brief inquiry, the Police Department determined no crime had occurred.

Harvard fellows bring their insight to city programs

The mayor is adding a touch of brainpower to City Hall.

Four fellows from Harvard – we mean the academic types – have started working with the mayor's office this summer. They're researching several topics and the office will discuss their findings after their eight-week stints are up.

They are looking into downtown development, reforming the city's public schools, homelessness and trying to expand the city's film industry.

The fellows – and by that, we mean they're all guys – are Sandeep Acharya, Aaron Gray, Jeremiah Jackson and Andrew Rosskamm. They're not being paid by the city, but are getting stipends from the Harvard Fellowship Program.

Johnson said the idea to bring fellows to City Hall was modeled after a similar program at the White House and that the Harvard men will bring "invaluable insight" to the city.

• Don't repeat the same comment over and over. We heard you the first time.

• Do not use the commenting system for advertising. That's spam and it isn't allowed.
