Winds expected to cool Sacramento a bit today

Published: Sunday, Jul. 5, 2009 - 12:00 am | Page 2B

The main heat this Fourth of July weekend is coming from fireworks and not the weather.

Sunny skies are in the forecast today, but southerly winds between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts of up to 30 mph, are expected in the late morning and afternoon, said Felix Garcia, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

Highs today are expected to be in the high 80s to the low 90s.

A slight drop in temperatures is expected by midweek. High temperatures in the mid- to lows 80s are forecast, with lows dropping toward the low 50s.

Saturday was perfect flip-flop weather for Independence Day celebrations, but by evening people were reaching for a light sweater.

A ridge of high pressure is sitting over the Sacramento region, making for very clear skies after the sun sets.

Water temperatures still are pretty cool.

The American River at the Hazel Avenue bridge was a chilly 60 degrees and the Sacramento River at the Delta was 62 degrees Friday, according to online data from the California Department of Water Resources.

The surface temperature of Folsom Lake was 77 degrees Saturday morning, according to Folsom Lake Marina's Web site.

Planning a boating excursion at Folsom Lake this weekend?

Boaters using the ramp at Brown's Ravine should plan to be in the water by noon, since parking is in short supply and the ramp has been closing early.

Arriving early may also mean an easier time getting the boat out of the water, because a majority of boaters seem to leave between 4 and 6 p.m., making for a traffic nightmare, the marina's Web site advises.

Boaters are asked to park their vehicles and trailers using only one space.

Highs Monday are expected to stay in the mid- to upper 80s, while temperatures Tuesday through Friday will hover in the low 90s, Garcia said.

Overnight lows likely will be in the mid-50s all week, he said.

For next weekend, clear skies and warmer temperatures are forecast.
