SIERRAVILLE -- Public comment is being sought on a $45-per-night fee proposal for the new rental of Sardine Lookout in the Tahoe National Forest.
Rentals are expected to begin this fall at Sardine, the second fire lookout to be offered for rent in the Sierraville Ranger District. The proposed amount matches the fee for Calpine Lookout, the first lookout to be rented in the district.
Sardine, a 1930s-era structure atop the scenic Sierra Buttes, has been upgraded with a propane heater, stove and other features, Ann Westling, forest spokeswoman, said in a news release.
"Ninety-five percent of the funds collected through the rental process would be used at the site to operate, maintain and improve public services," she said.
Fee-proposal comments are requested through Sept. 10. They may be emailed to Michael Baldrica at mbaldrica@fs.fed.us or mailed to the Sierraville Ranger Station, 317 Lincoln Highway, Sierraville, CA 96126.
The Plumas National Forest is also preparing a fire lookout station -- the Black Mountain Lookout -- for overnight rental next year.
