Update: Rio Linda fire under control after buildings burn

A fire that started about 1:40 this afternoon is under control after destroying a house, barn and several out buildings in a rural area of Rio Linda.

Capt. Jim Doucette of the Sacramento Fire Department said the fire started in the 7700 block of West Second Street near a barn with some type of trailer or mobile home inside.

A strong wind was blowing and the fire jumped to several different areas, eventually spreading from West Second to Delano Street. Doucette estimated that the area affected was about a mile long and a quarter-mile wide.

This section of Rio Linda is characterized by large parcels with ranchette-type homes, farm equipment and livestock. Doucette said he did not believe any animals were injured in the fire.

He said a pedestrian in the area was struck by a vehicle and taken to a hospital during the fire, but he did not know whether the incident was fire-related.

Doucette said about 100 firefighters were involved in fighting the three-alarm fire. Ten additional grass units, engines designed to go off-road, were called in and the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District's helicopter dropped water on the blaze.

"It had the potential to be another Auburn-type fire," Doucette said.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
