Foothill High School in Sacramento was selected as one of five state schools to pilot a New Energy Academy.
The academies will provide energy career education for students who might otherwise not have the opportunity, according to a press release.
"Green energy is a growing field that is critical to turn the tide on climate change," said state schools chief Jack O'Connell in a prepared statement. "I'm excited that California students in these programs will be learning about technologies that can help the entire planet."
The program begins this school year with curriculum planning and teacher development.
The selected schools will receive grants and access to professional development workshops and industry experts.
Berkeley High School in Berkeley, Edison High School in Fresno, Independence High School in Bakersfield and Venture Academy in Stockton also will participate in the program, a partnership between Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and the California Department of Education.
