Plumas County's only wilderness area will be honored Saturday when the Bucks Lake Wilderness celebrates its 25th anniversary.
The festivities at Silver Lake Campground will include storytelling, kayaking and naturalist-led hikes.
The daylong celebration is also a tribute to a group of outdoor advocates who successfully lobbied for congressional designation of the 21,000-acre area, which stretches from Spanish Peak to the Feather River Canyon.
Bucks Lake was included in the California Wilderness Act of 1984 despite the unanimous opposition of the Plumas County Board of Supervisors.
The area features granite cirques, quaking bogs and old-growth red fir forests.
A section of the Pacific Crest Trail and runs along the crest of an escarpment for 13 miles before dropping down on a switchback trail to the North Fork of the Feather River.
Because parking at Silver Lake is extremely limited, free bus service will be available, with buses leaving the Safeway parking lot in Quincy at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Return trips will leave Silver Lake at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
