Disturbing new evidence has been filed in the case of last month's beating death of a student at California State University, Sacramento, with a detailed description of the vicious attack and bizarre statements by the suspect.
Quran Mahammed Jones, who turned 20 today, has been charged with murder and assault on three police officers in connection with the Oct. 21 slaying of Scott Hawkins, a 23-year-old dorm-mate of Jones.
He was shot by police and is recovering at the UC Davis Medical Center, where officials said today he is in good condition.
A synopsis of the case from Sacramento police indicated that Jones "had a crazed look in his eyes" when campus officers confronted him, and that he later apparently tried to blame the victim for the attack.
According to the document, an officer riding in the ambulance with Jones after the attack had a brief conversation with the suspect:
"What is your name?" the officer asked.
"Jerome," Jones responded.
"Who is the other guy?" the officer asked.
"My roommate," Jones replied.
"What happened?" the officer continued.
"He shot me first," Jones said. "He shot me first."
Authorities say no one shot Jones except police officers, who only fired after he refused to drop his knife and was not stopped by at least seven rounds of pepper balls fired into Jones' chest.
The court papers also indicate that a search of the dormitory turned up the knife and bat used in the attack, as well as a piece of paper on which Jones had written of his own death in a note with misspellings and punctuation errors:
"If Quran Muhammed Jones ever dies He Quran Muhammed Jones orders you to put his body in an incinerator so that every atom of his body is burned Away Thankyou."
Because Jones is still hospitalized, no court date has been set and he technically has not been formally charged in court.
However, the criminal complaint was filed on Tuesday in anticipation of his booking and subsequent court arraignment.
