DAVIS – It's not just bloodhounds needed at the University of California, Davis, veterinary blood bank.

Any dog might be a suitable blood-bank donor if it is 1 to 8 years old, weighs at least 55 pounds and has never been pregnant.

The blood bank collects and stores dog blood for transfusion to treat all kinds of conditions in dogs, including surgical complications.

If cleared for donation after an initial appointment, the dog will return four or five times each year for donations lasting a half-hour.

To obtain more information or to set up a screening appointment, call (530) 752-1393.
