Roseville warns against illegal fireworks

ROSEVILLE – Fire officials are warning residents that enforcement of the law against illegal fireworks will be vigorous this week.

People caught with illegal fireworks in the city face a minimum fine of $500, Fire Marshal Dennis Mathisen said.

Among illegal fireworks are such items as firecrackers, Roman candles and bottle rockets.

"Anything that explodes, flies through the air or darts on the ground is illegal," Mathisen said.

Legal, "safe and sane" fireworks are available at permitted fireworks stands, he said.

With the dry conditions, the risk of sparking a fire with illegal fireworks is high, Mathisen said.

Meanwhile, all fireworks are banned in unincorporated areas of Placer County because of the fire risks they create, county spokeswoman Anita Yoder said.

The exceptions are displays approved by the county and put on by pyrotechnics companies licensed by the state fire marshal, Yoder said.
