KINGS BEACH The Placer County Board of Supervisors and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency have placed a controversial plan for improving the road through Kings Beach in North Lake Tahoe on their agendas this week.
At a 10:30 a.m. Tuesday hearing, the supervisors will take public comment on proposed road configurations for the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project.
The supervisors also plan to vote on a preferred configuration and to certify the project's environmental impact report, said county spokesman Robert Miller.
Two alternatives are under consideration: three lanes with roundabouts, "which is still recommended by the county Department of Public Works"; and four lanes with traffic lights, "which also has supporters," Miller said.
The goal is to improve pedestrian safety, aesthetics and water runoff on the 1.1-mile stretch of Highway 28, he said, adding that both alternatives include bike lanes and sidewalks.
The meeting will be at the North Tahoe Conference Center, 8318 North Lake Boulevard, Kings Beach.
At 1 p.m. Wednesday, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will consider a request by governing board member Steven Merrill for reconsideration of the board's June 25 denial of the popular three-lanes-and-roundabouts alternative.
The 7-6 "no" vote by TRPA's governing board, which resulted in a public outcry, overruled recommendations for that alternative by the TRPA Advisory Planning Commission, county Planning Commission and road staff, League to Save Lake Tahoe and Sierra Business Council.
Written comments on the reconsideration request may be submitted, but no public comment will be taken. The TRPA meeting will also be at the North Tahoe Conference Center.
Both boards must approve the plan and its preferred configuration in order for it to be viable, Miller said.
