Roseville City Council on Wednesday night will consider Roseville Electric's proposed two-year rate increase.
Under the proposal, rates would go up 6 percent next year for all customers and another 6 percent in February 2009.
The proposal includes establishing a third tier for residential customers using more than 1,000 kilowatt-hours a month, and charging a new customer fee for climate change mitigation regulations.
Roseville Electric officials told the city Public Utilities Commission last month that the increase was needed to offset rising power prices, construction of necessary infrastructure and the cost of climate change mitigation regulations.
Without the rate increase, Roseville Electric will be short $85 million by 2012, officials said.
If approved by the City Council, the rate hike will go into effect Feb. 1.
The council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, in the Civic Center Council Chambers, 311 Vernon St.
