Tracking device leads to arrests

Published: Tuesday, Dec. 04, 2007

Rocklin police had help tracking down two men for allegedly stealing motorcycles.

Sgt. Tom Dwyer said a tracking device on one of the stolen motorcycles allowed police to find two missing bikes Monday inside a van at an apartment complex.

Officers staked out the parking lot and arrested the suspects when the men got into the van, Dwyer said.

The incident began at 8:30 a.m. Monday when police received a signal from the auto theft device known as LoJack, he said. The device is planted somewhere on the vehicle and is activated when police enter the vehicle's identification number into a crime computer. The device gives an inaudible signal that can be tracked by police to its location.

Rocklin officers traced the signal to the Sunset Summit Apartments on Sunset Boulevard.

Dwyer said police looked through the windows of the van and could see two partially covered motorcycles inside.

Arrested on two counts each of vehicle theft were Alexsandr Pavliy, 21, and Valentin Gergi, 23. Both are residents of Antelope.
