The San Francisco 49ers fan who fell over a Monster Park railing to his death Sunday was 31-year-old Torrey Kretschman of Roseville, the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office reported Monday.
Paramedics pronounced Kretschman dead at the Candlestick Point stadium after he plunged 20 feet from an upper concourse concession area to a concrete ramp below.
The incident occurred during the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.
"This is a very sad day for the 49ers and all our fans," said Lisa Lang, a 49ers vice president.
"Our condolences go out to the family for their loss."
Sgt. Neville Gittens, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department, said eyewitnesses told officers that Kretschman tried to hop up on the 4-foot-high concrete wall that borders the concourse area.
The wall is about 6 inches wide and sloped, making it nearly impossible to sit on.
"Basically, he misjudged it and fell over," Gittens said.
Paramedics at the stadium tried to revive him for about 30 minutes.
Gittens said the Medical Examiner's Office would analyze Kretschman's body to determine if alcohol was involved.
Attempts to reach Kretschman's friends and family were unsuccessful late Monday.
Kretschman's death is at least the third in the past 25 years at Monster Park, formerly known as Candlestick Park.
In 1984, a man who was frustrated over the San Francisco Giants' sixth straight loss screamed obscenities from an upper-deck railing, then toppled 40 feet to his death in front of thousands of baseball fans. In 1983, a man who had been drinking and riding atop a garbage Dumpster at the ballpark after a football game died when he fell over the side and onto the parking lot.
