Roseville residents who purchased new computers, monitors or television sets for Christmas no longer need to worry about how they're going to get rid of their old ones.
The city of Roseville offers a no-charge home pickup service for outdated monitors, TV sets or other electronic items.
Car batteries, household batteries, motor oil and other items that are considered hazardous and can't be placed in refuse cans also are eligible for the pickups, said Sean Bigley of the city Environmental Utilities Department.
"The free service helps residents easily and responsibly dispose of electronic waste, save a car trip to the Materials Recovery Facility and help the environment," Bigley said in an e-mail.
Residents call (916) 774-5780 for an appointed pickup time. Discarded items should be left at the doorstep, Bigley said. City pickups of e-waste items can be made as often as once a month, he said.
A full list of the items that are accepted can be found at www.roseville.ca.us/batteries.
Bigley said 790 televisions and 767 computer monitors have been picked up since the service began in August 2006. More than 4,200 other e-waste items, such as laptops, printers, stereos, telephones, cell phones, VCRs, radios and microwave ovens, also have been picked up, he said.
Placer County does not have regularly scheduled pickups of e-waste items at people's homes. County spokeswoman Anita Yoder urged residents who need to get rid of e-waste to take their items to the Materials Recovery Facility at 3033 Fiddyment Road, near the inersection with Athens Avenue north of Roseville. Free drop-offs are accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.
