AUBURN Placer County will offer identification cards to patients whose doctors prescribe marijuana.
The cards, priced at $125 each, will be available as part of health services fees adopted Tuesday by the county supervisors.
Under Proposition 215, approved by state voters in 1996, a patient can use marijuana for medical purposes if prescribed by a physician.
Federal agencies, however, have not recognized medical marijuana use as legal and occasionally have raided medical marijuana dispensaries and arrested users, said Aaron Smith of the Marijuana Policy Project, a Washington, D.C.-based group.
He said Senate Bill 420 attempts to clear up vague language in Proposition 215 and allows the creation of identification cards for qualified medical marijuana patients.
"Now a person will be able to show the ID card, and the county health department can verify that the person is a patient in good standing," he said.
