Three Placer County students will compete in the California Central Valley Spelling Bee, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Scottish Rite Center, 6151 H St., Sacramento.
The students are Anamaria Lopez, a fifth-grader at Rocklin Academy; Michael Ordorica, a seventh-grader at St. Joseph Parish School in Auburn; and Krisha Mae Cabrera, a seventh-grader at St. Rose School in Roseville.
The three were among 64 students who qualified for the oral spelling bee by scoring highly on a written spelling test last month. The winner of Wednesday's competition will represent the Central Valley at the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May.
This national spelling bee was started by the Louisville Courier-Journal in 1925 wtih nine contestants. The event is open to qualifying students through the eighth grade who have not reached the age of 16 by the date of the national finals.
