AUBURN Two 18-year-old men who killed or injured animals during drive-by shootings last fall near Lincoln were sentenced Friday one to 270 days in jail and the other to a suspended prison term of six years and eight months.
Timothy Schulz, who was given the jail term, and Collin Lovejoy, who received the suspended sentence, also were placed on five years' probation by Placer Superior Court Judge Colleen Nichols, who called their behavior "appalling."
Nichols noted some of the animals were pets while others were farm animals.
She ordered each defendant to pay $12,128 restitution to the owners of the animals, which included two dogs, two goats, a ram, a chicken, a llama, a cow and a bull calf. Six animals died.
The Lincoln men were arrested Oct. 27 after a three-day shooting spree.
Schulz pleaded guilty to three counts of felony animal cruelty. Nichols ordered him to serve half of his 270-day sentence in jail and said he would be eligible to serve the other half through alternative sentencing, which could mean wearing an electric monitor.
Lovejoy, who pleaded no contest to eight felony counts of animal cruelty, could face further discipline from the U.S. Marine Corps. He was absent without leave when the animals were shot.
