LINCOLN Local schools probably will open next fall with fewer staff members, larger classes and less in the way of custodial services.
Western Placer Unified School District, which serves Lincoln, has approved $2.9 million in budget cuts for the 2008-09 school year. The cuts are in response to a recent drop in enrollment and in anticipation of rising costs and flattened state funding.
District trustees voted 4-1 Tuesday night in favor of the cuts to the district's $40 million budget. Board member Ana Stevenson cast the dissenting vote.
Staff reductions will account for 68 percent of the budget cuts. The cuts include dropping one elementary principal's job, eliminating kindergarten aides from classes with two teachers, cutting custodial services by 10 percent and reducing clerical positions at elementary schools.
