River City soccer manages a first

River City recently won the school's first Sac-Joaquin Section boys soccer championship with a 5-4 sudden-death, penalty-kick shootout win over Ceres in the Division IV finals in Stockton. Senior goalkeeper Hulises Muro made a key save in the penalty-kick phase after the teams had played to a 1-1 tie in regulation and two scoreless 10-minute overtimes. The Raiders, coached by Pedro Ceja and Eric Ruffner, finished 23-2-1 overall and won the Capital Valley Conference with a 9-2-1 record. "It's the first boys section title since the tennis team won in 1984, and we believe it's the first league soccer title for the boys," Ruffner said. Senior forward Charly Becerra led the team in scoring with 26 goals and was one of four Raiders to make the all-league first team. The others were senior sweeper Eduardo Quintero, senior fullback Moises Huerta and junior midfielder Edgar Payan. Alan Salcedo, who had 18 assists, and Rudy Ortiz were honorable mention.

Among the major boys tournaments on the agenda running today through Saturday are the 30th annual Bill Cartwright Classic at Elk Grove; the 34th annual Jack Scott Invitational at Rio Americano; the Bronco Basketball Roundup at Bella Vista; and the Gold Dust Shootout at El Dorado.
