Last week was a triumphant one for Valley High School. On Wednesday, Chris Hoffman returned to a familiar south Sacramento campus, greeted by a rousing ovation from students welcoming the new superintendent of the Elk Grove Unified School District. Hoffman was a football team captain at Valley in the late 1980s. He said sports helped mold him, a message fourth-year coach Dave Filan preaches to his players.

Four weeks into the high school football season, coaches and athletes are spent. But there’s no rest for the weary. League play starts in earnest this week.

Casey Taylor lines up powerhouse programs to test the ability and resilience of his team and coaching staff, and the tough scheduling has paid off with two CIF State Bowl appearances since 2011, the most by any area program. Grant, Rocklin, Granite Bay and Folsom each have played in one bowl, with Grant winning in 2008, Folsom in 2010 and Granite Bay in 2012.

Aaron Garcia was ready for a homecoming to Del Paso Heights, where he would teach and coach at his alma mater, Grant High School. He looked forward to watching his three children grow, including Gigi, a 6-foot-2 basketball forward at McClatchy, where she generates considerable recruiting interest. But football keeps seeping into Garcia’s life, and it’s hard to say no.

A Christian Brothers High School volleyball coach in Sacramento, missing since Wednesday, has been found in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Sacramento police reported Sunday night.

He set receiving records at Capital Christian High School, played semi-pro ball, coached a bit in college and then led a small school in Southern California to the playoffs. But what the first-year coach at Rio Linda experienced Friday night tops it all in the frantic, clutch-your-chest variety.

Police on Sunday said they have no new leads on the whereabouts of a Florian Tria, a volleyball coach at Christian Brothers High School who was dropped off by a driver near her Curtis Park home Wednesday evening and has not been seen since.
