The Home Depot Center in Carson will remain the site of the 2008 and 2009 California Interscholastic Federation state football championship bowl games.

Under a new format, the championships will expand from three games on one day to five games over two days, Dec. 19-20. Teams will be selected Dec. 14.

The CIF considered bids from six other facilities throughout the state, including UC Davis.

But CIF executive director Marie Ishida said the Home Depot Center is ideal for holding ancillary events, such as the state cheerleading competition and coaches clinic associated with the bowl games.

The 27,000-seat stadium is considered a better fit for high school games than larger venues such as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Stanford Stadium, facilities that also submitted bids.

During the state basketball playoffs, Ishida had suggested all or part of the five games might be played at another stadium or stadiums because the Home Depot Center was "cost prohibitive."

Although terms were not released, Ishida said Home Depot officials provided a financial deal and other incentives "that we could not refuse."

UC Davis gets D-I title game

Sac-Joaquin Section assistant commissioner John Williams said the section and UC Davis have agreed in principle to hold the 2008 Division I football championship game Dec. 13 at the university.

"UC Davis wants us to come there," Williams said. "They gave us a ballpark figure a month ago."

He said the section's executive committee on April 14 gave Commissioner Pete Saco permission to move the game.

Last year's D-I title game, in which Napa beat St. Mary's of Stockton 38-36, was held at Stagg Memorial Stadium at Pacific.

But since the Tigers dropped their football program after the 1995 season, the stadium has fallen into disrepair. The press box has been condemned, the locker rooms are dilapidated, and the section had to bring in portable ticket booths and toilets.
