Q&A: Financial Planning

Q: I am 55 and do not intend to retire untill I am in my lat 60 poss 68. I still owe student loans. Am I still required to pay student loans after I am 65 years old. I am a nurse and intend to be in academia. I would like to continue with my education and attain a Doctorate in nurseing to enable me to teach for a loing time. The cost will be about $50,000.00. I still owe $60,000.00. I have a MSN/ED. Thank you.

A: In general, the attainment of age 65 does not relieve your obligation to pay student loans. However, since you are in the nursing field and considering teaching, there may be some public programs that could benefit you. Two specific programs to investigate include the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program and the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. You can obtain more information from hrsa.gov, csac.ca.gov, and studentaid.ed.gov.
